Summary: This training, led by Dr. Amita Fakimi, introduces Certified Peer Support Specialists to the foundational principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a widely practiced, evidence-based therapeutic approach. Through the training, peers learn how CBT identifies the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and how cognitive distortions — such as personalization, catastrophizing, and black-and-white thinking — can negatively influence mental health.

The training emphasizes the importance of certified peers understanding these concepts, not to deliver therapy, but to effectively support individuals in recovery. Peers are encouraged to apply techniques like cognitive reframing, SMART goal setting, and active listening to assist others in navigating mental health and substance use challenges. Ethical considerations, including professional boundaries and scope of practice, are also highlighted.

By integrating CBT principles into peer support, certified peers can enhance their impact in treatment settings—strengthening client engagement, promoting emotional resilience, and improving recovery outcomes.
