Course Description
This course explores substance use during pregnancy and parenting through the lens of trauma,
stigma, and family stability. Participants will examine how fear, punitive systems, social
inequities, and generational trauma impact engagement in care for pregnant and parenting
individuals navigating substance use. Emphasis is placed on harm reduction, trauma-informed
and culturally responsive care, postpartum vulnerability, and practical strategies that
strengthen trust, retention in care, and long-term family wellbeing.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
1. Identify common substance use considerations during pregnancy and parenting.
2. Describe how stigma, fear, and punitive systems impact care engagement and
treatment outcomes.
3. Apply harm reduction and trauma-informed engagement strategies with perinatal
clients.
4. Recognize protective factors that support recovery and family stability.
5. Strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration and referral coordination practices
