This training is regarding naloxone and Good Samaritan laws, two critical components of overdose prevention and emergency response. Naloxone is a medication that can rapidly reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, which restores breathing and gives a person the opportunity to survive what would otherwise be a fatal event. However, having naloxone available is really only just part of the equation. In many overdose situations, people hesitate to call for help because they fear legal consequences for themselves or others who may be present. This is where Good Samaritan laws become extremely important. These laws are designed to encourage people to seek emergency medical assistance during an overdose by providing certain legal protections for the person experiencing the overdose and for those who call 911 or provide aid. Understanding both the medical and legal aspects of overdose response is essential for professionals working in substance use treatment, because these tools can significantly increase the chances that someone survives long enough to access treatment and recovery services.
